Imagine having no limitations. Imagine endless possibilities. Is it freeing, or overwhelming?
Now imagine being limited, to only make nine marks. How does this transform each mark, making it into something bigger, somehow more important? How does it change how we make decisions? How does limitation push us to consider everything with more attention?
These playful works document the internal process of mindfully creating within the limitation of nine marks.
‘Counting Creativity’ is a process driven body of artwork exploring mindfulness and limitations in creativity.
What started out as an experiment to explore creativity became my daily mindfulness practice and one way I access meditation. This has allowed me to create a deeper connection with my inner world, an anchor to calmness in a turbulent outer world. This practice can be a mirror to our internal world, a place to observe, recognise and let go of mental patterns (perfectionism, inner critic) as well as a place to play!
In this show I explore how mindfulness can allow us to create with more freedom. When we focus on the moment, the creation process itself is the purpose, rather than the artwork created. Mindfulness allows us to be in the present moment, to release worries or concerns about the past or future, and this is my way of accessing the current moment, mindfully through art.
All original pieces on display are available for purchase, as well as some limited edition art prints.
COunting 9 collection
A collection of works created specially for this exhibition on 300gm archival quality watercolour paper and using professional mixed mediums including watercolour, acrylic, charcoal, oil pastel, pencil, wax and collage.
Paper works are usually mounted, framed in black wood and ready to take home. Unfortunately my collection was caught in the recent unprecedented floods in Chiang Mai – my framers shop was under 1.5 m of water, so my works were lost. We are showing this collection without frames at La Bonita, however works can be framed upon request.
These artworks are beautifully bold on their own and also when paired or grouped together.
