Balance Intention

Balance Intention

Balance Intention depicts a system—both a whole and its individual parts—along with the connections between them. It brings to life the interdependence of the system, and how each part, no matter how seemingly small, plays a part within the bigger system.

On a personal level, the installation reflects the artist’s internal experience:

“As humans, we are complex beings with many sides to our personalities, each with its own unique character, struggles, and strengths. How do we choose what parts of us we share at any given moment? Is it a conscious choice, or an unconscious instinct?

We often hold back, fearing judgment or misunderstanding. Are we too much, or not enough?

Regardless of how much we share externally, internally, we constantly balance these parts of ourselves, seeking equilibrium. Balance Intention is a map of that process—a physical representation of this moment and what led me here.”

On a planetary level, this installation embodies Gaia theory, which views the Earth as one biosphere, or whole living system. All life exists within this biosphere, which contains several other complex systems, each with a specific function and intricately connected to the others. These systems maintain harmony through constant self-balancing and adjustment.

The installation also reflects the indigenous worldview that humans are part of nature, not separate from it. Everything around us has been dreamt up by a human mind and created from the materials of the Earth. While humanity has achieved remarkable things with technology, we also understand that the planet is finite. There is a limit to how much we can extract from it.

We are living now in a period of unknown, where the levels of pollution and extraction are measurably reducing how well these living systems can regulate our environment.

We are now living in the Anthropocene, a time where pollution and over-extraction are diminishing the Earth’s ability to regulate its environment effectively.

Humans are part of nature, not separate from it.

We are all unique, just like the next person.

We are individual and also part of the whole system.

Balance Intention is a reflection of both personal and planetary interdependence, inviting the audience to consider the dynamics of our world and our place within it.
